Going to the chapel
An annual giving program that aims to benefit The Helen Mauck Galbreath Memorial Chapel Building (commonly known as Galbreath Chapel) has been established by a group of Ohio University alumni and friends to support and enhance the revered space located on the university's College Green in Athens. The chapel closed December 2011 due to safety and accessibility issues that will cost $1 million to address.
Africa and democracy
Yusuf Kalango, director of the university's Institute for International Journalism interviewed thousands of Africans about their perceptions of government and media for the book "African Media and Democratization: Public Opinion, Ownership, and the Rule of Law." A former journalist who has worked at outlets including CNN International, Kalango focused on nations usually outside the scope of such research for this trailblazing work.
Tuition for nurses
The school of nursing has been awarded a $5 million federal grant to train unemployed nurses and those seeking to increase their credentials. More than 200 students will receive paid tuition through the program, which will also collaborate with local and regional employers to bring employment opportunities to the medically underserved region of Southeast Ohio.
Two turntables and a video
Graduate student Robert Howsare used two turntables to create a drawing machine. A Vimeo video of the machine creating asymmetrical, circular shapes drew half a million views. "I was interested in how crystals grow over time, and I was also intrigued by the reticulation where a puddle dries up and leaves rings," he told The Post.
